Hyaluronan: sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid, HA, is a polysaccharide that is found naturally throughout the human body. It is present in the extracellular matrix of connective tissues, in the aqueous humor and vitreous of the eye, the synovial fluid of articulated joints and the skin. Hyaluronan of identical molecular structure is also to be found in the protective coat of some naturally occurring bacteria.
Hyaluronan is long chain polysaccharide composed of repeating disaccharide units of sodium glucuronate and N-acetyl glucosamine linked by ß 1-3 and ß 1-4 glycosidic bonds. The molecular weight of hyaluronan is dependant on the number of disaccharide units that the linear chain is composed of and can be metabolised up to a molecular weight of 2 to 3 million Daltons. In solution high molecular weight hyaluronan molecules form a flexible random coil. At low molecular weight hyaluronan adopts a stiffer conformation. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed at concentrations of hyaluronan above 1mg/ml resulting in a clear solution with viscoelastic properties.
